Week of 5/18/20:

E-Learning Week #9 – last week of school!!!

Mon. 5/18: Maroon Day- no Biology class. Make sure you are almost finished with the Ice Core Lab.

Tues. 5/19: Gold Day – no class meeting today! We will meet on Friday.

IMPORTANT: All assignments must be completed and sent to me before 4pm this Friday! No exceptions.

For today,   Continue to work on the Ice Core Lab and you can begin Friday’s lesson by watching the EdPuzzle video about Cane Toads (9min). When we lived in Brisbane, Australia, I used to HATE these things. They are not native, terribly invasive, and are systematically wiping out many of the indigenous wildlife found nowhere else on earth!  We used to dress up in gloves and protective eyewear, turn on lights at the school oval (football field) and gather as many in trashbags as possible. Why protective gear? They shoot poison!  Then we would freeze them. It’s the most humane way to kill them.

Wed. 5/20: work and rest day. Try to give your eyes and back a break from the computer!

Thurs 5/21: Maroon Day – no Biology class. Make sure you have finished the Ice Core Lab and Cane Toad video.  All work must be completed by 4pm on Friday – I have grades due Monday and need time to grade everything.

Fri. 5/22: Gold Day – LAST DAY of SHCOOL!  I will send you a link to the Google Meet class meeting via Google Chat at 8:25am. Class starts promptly at 8:30am.

Agenda for today: Q&A about anything we have done so far and say goodbye! Make sure you send me any assignment you want graded BEFORE 4pm TODAY.

Today’s extra credit assignment: Create a collage of mostly photos that tell the story of one invasive species found in the United States. It should include: name, where it is invasive, where it came from originally, why is it destructive, and other important information (this will vary depending upon what organism you choose). Complete it today!  I will not accept any work after 4pm today since I have grades due Monday morning.

Here is mine:

There are some easy math problems to do within the video and the lab – YAY MATH!!

Then you will complete the virtual lab about Exploring Biomass Pyramids.  Click on “Launch the Interactive”. As you work, you will be typing in answers. The lab gives you yellow HINTS and and online calculator to help you out. Make sure you fully answer the questions since it will generate a pdf of your data when you are done. Email me that pdf.  Due before our next class on Tuesday 5/12 .

E-Learning Week #6

Mon. 4/27: Maroon Day- no Biology class. Make sure you have finished the Antibiotic Resistance video from EdPuzzle before tomorrow.

Tues. 4/28: Gold Day – no class meeting today! We will meet on Friday.

For today, complete the Natural Selection Simulation at Phet worksheet.  We are going to be breeding bunnies! Send me photos of the completed worksheet or write the answers in your BILL and send me a photo of that.  The link to the simulation is at the top of the page. You may not be able to access it unless you have JAVA on your computer. I think anyone with a Mac will probably not get it to work. If you have trouble and can’t get it to work, I videoed the simulation and put it onto EdPuzzle. It takes a little bit more time to watch the video, but it will work.  You only need to watch the video if you can’t get the simulation to work.  Due before our next class on Friday.  We will have an “entrance ticket”/quiz about Population Genetics (antibiotic resistance and how natural selection effects populations) on Friday.

Wed. 4/29: work and rest day. Try to give your eyes and back a break from the computer!

Thurs 4/30: Maroon Day – not Biology class. Finish your Natural Selection simulation before class starts tomorrow and send me a photo. We WILL meet for class tomorrow.

Fri. 5/1: Gold Day – I will send you a link to the Google Meet at 8:25am  via our Google Chat and class starts promptly at 8:30am.  Please have your BILLs and a writing utensil ready.

Agenda for today: Q&A about anything we have done so far. We will be discussing how cladograms and phylogenetic trees are used to show evolutionary relationships using this worksheet:  Cladogram Analysis.  We will only meet for about 15 minutes and work on the worksheet together. I will be “calling on you” to answer questions as we work this together. Then, complete the Amino Acid Sequences and Evolutionary Relationships worksheet.  Use a pencil to do the last problem or do on scrap paper first! Due before our next class on Tuesday 5/5.

See sections 11.9-11.10 of you book for help and more information.
