Wisconsin Fast Plants Genetics

wfp_genetics

Learning Goals: to observe the inheritance of a phenotypic trait – stem color – in 3 generations of seedlings to obtain evidence of how variation can occur between parents and offspring; Analyze and interpret observational data that is evidence of variation of inherited traits; Use mathematics and excel to calculate the chi-square goodness of fit statistical test to evaluate hypotheses about mechanisms of inheritance. Evaluate the importance of using a large sample size by comparing individual data to class data.

Key Terms:  Law of Dominance, Law of Segregation, homozygous, heterozygous, F1 and F2 generations, phenotype and genotype, germination, Punnett square, Chi-Square analysis (reinforcing good data collection and reporting techniques).
